The challenges posed to family farmers remain a priority for Saai during the launching of the United Nation’s (UN’s) Decade of Family Farming.
The UN will launch its Decade of Family Farming on 29 May 2019 in Rome, Italy, in cooperation with the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Francois Rossouw will attend the launch on behalf of Saai. He says that the four greatest challenges that family farmers in South Africa face are:
- Climate change and its consequences, for example the continuing drought that many parts of the country still face;
- The ever-present threat of expropriation without compensation and the attack on private property;
- Farm murders and crime; and
- Access to financing.
